I was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement to create this piece. I was horrified by the experiences of racism that had surfaced as a result of the tragic killing of George Floyd. I consider myself to be lucky being a privileged white woman from Ireland. And to hear that justice isn't being served because of the colour of one's skin is absolutely infuriating. In this piece, I wanted to portray the message that we are all people, no matter your background, race, sex or religion. That everyone deserves to treated with dignity. The three candles shown have different colours; representing the variety of skin colour. And as each of the candles are lit, the wax turns red as it melts away; signifying bleeding. Revealing that on the inside, they are all equal. The bright light symbolises the heinous acts of violence towards people of colour, coming into the awareness of the public eye. Ultimately ending with the message of hope. Now that these crimes are being acknowledged, there is hope for a better tomorrow.
